We maintain a Safeguarding File on each child for whom we provide childcare.
We endeavour to ensure that the child safeguarding files are correct and include up to date data in line with the DSCB guidance and model safeguarding file and they are applied consistently. www.devon.gov.uk/model-policies
We record a child’s pre-existing injuries and monitor trends, we do this by asking parent’s to always complete one of our Existing Injuries Forms which can be found towards the front of their Child’s Daily Diary Booklet or Communication Booklet. For those parent’s who fail to complete one of our Existing Injury Forms then we will complete our own with information supplied by the parent and keep a copy at Grafton and a copy handed to parents or carers upon collection of their child.
We establish partnership working with agencies, including children’s centres, to support vulnerable children and families who attend Grafton Childcare.
Here at Grafton Childcare we are aware of and understand the reasons behind the documentation and legislation listed below and have included it below as a resource bank for both parents and staff to access as and when required.

Prevent Duty Guidance
This places a requirement on all early years providers ‘to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’. The Government has defined extremism in the Prevent strategy as “vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs… and … calls for the death of members of our armed forces”.
The guidance states that all early years providers must understand the risk of radicalisation and implement the Prevent duty effectively. This information must be shared with all staff. We must also know who to contact to raise a concern if we are worried about a child being drawn into terrorism or radicalised.
The Prevent Duty guidance identifies best practice for early years providers including early years settings on pages 10 - 12 and describes ways in which we can comply. The guidance also refers to an ‘explicit requirement to promote fundamental British values as part of broader requirements relating to the quality of education and to promoting the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils’. British values of ‘democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs’ must be promoted in age appropriate ways in all early years settings.
Demonstrating compliance
Compliance with the Prevent Duty guidance - we have downloaded the guidance for our computer files (safeguarding folder) and printed the relevant pages of the guidance for our safeguarding file (pages 10 – 12). We will update our safeguarding procedures to state we are aware of and compliant with the new Prevent Duty Guidance when our Local Authority has advised us about their procedures.
Compliance with promoting British Values - we have confirmed our commitment to promote British Values which we refer to as Grafton's Community Values as part of our ongoing commitment to deliver high quality teaching and learning to all children in our care in our weekly blog.
Multi-agency statutory guidance on female genital mutilation - we are aware of the new statutory guidance on female genital mutilation and that it may be relevant to Grafton Childcare when working with women and girls at risk of female genital mutilation (FGM) or dealing with its consequences. This document is not intended to replace wider safeguarding guidance, but to provide additional advice on FGM.
Local Authority information - we have contacted our Local Authority (Devon) who have advised us that they are updating their model safeguarding procedures and writing a guide to the Prevent Duty guidance which will be available later this year. When we receive it we will share it with our families.
Sharing information with parents – parents can download our safeguarding files at any time; we will share our safeguarding procedures update when Devon have given us further information.

Championing All Our Children - Improving the life-chances of vulnerable children in Devon, our staff were signposted to this very useful booklet following training they attended in March 2016. Although aimed more at school aged children it does contain some very useful information about helping staff to identify children who may be vulnerable, we have printed off the Vulnerability Checklist and added it to our Safeguarding Threshold Tool documents
New whistleblowing advice line launched
In February 2016 a new whistleblowing advice line was launched to offer support and guidance to anyone concerned about how child protection issues are being handled in their own or other organisations.
Run by the NSPCC with funding from the Home Office, the line is staffed Monday to Friday, from 8am to 8pm. The line has been set up in response to failures to protect children from sexual exploitation in Rotherham.

Anyone can call the whistleblowing advice line if they are worried about how a concern about a child is being handled. Professionals are encouraged to call the helpline as soon as possible if they believe that:
The NSPCC stresses that the advice line is not intended to replace any current practices or responsibilities of organisations working with children. Professionals should follow proceedures to raise any concerns about a child to their own employer in the first instance.
Remember everyone working with children has a responsibility to protect them from harm.
